Okay, so I was chatting with a buddy the other day about dogs that are cool with being left alone, and it got me thinking about the breeds I’ve seen that just don’t mind when you’ve got to step out for a bit. Some dogs are like, “Where are you going?” but others are more like, “Take your time, I’ve got this.”
1. Basset Hound
You ever meet a Basset Hound? Man, these dogs are all about that lounge life. I had a neighbor with a Basset, and every time she left for work, her dog would just stretch out on the couch and be out cold. It’s like their motto is “Don’t worry, I’ll nap through this.”
2. Chow Chow
Chow Chows? Now, these guys are pretty independent. I always joke that they’re the cat’s best friend because they’ve got that same, “I don’t need you, but I’ll tolerate you” attitude. When you leave them alone, they probably don’t even notice you’re gone until they hear the food bowl.
3. French Bulldog
Frenchies are funny little characters. They love hanging with you, sure, but they’re not going to throw a fit if you head out for a few hours. I knew this one Frenchie that would just curl up in the sunniest spot in the house and be perfectly content until her owner got back. No drama, just chill.
4. Shiba Inu
Shiba Inus, oh man. These dogs are so cool. They’re like, “You do you, I’ll do me.” Leave them alone, and they’ll just explore or find a sunny spot to nap. They’re not needy, they’re just happy doing their own thing. I kind of envy their independence sometimes.
5. Greyhound
People always think Greyhounds are these high-energy dogs that need constant exercise. But honestly? They’re couch potatoes when they’re not running. My friend had a Greyhound that would race around the yard and then crash on the couch for hours. Leave them alone, and they’ll likely just nap until you get back.
6. Shar Pei
Shar Peis are like the ultimate chill dogs. I remember this one Shar Pei I met—so calm, so relaxed. They’re not the type to get worked up if you leave them alone. They’ll just settle down and wait it out. No fuss, no muss.
7. Whippet
Whippets are like a mix of high energy and total relaxation. They’ll run around like maniacs when it’s playtime, but as soon as they’re done, it’s nap city. Leave them alone, and they’ll just snooze until you’re back. It’s like they have an on/off switch for energy.
8. Bullmastiff
Bullmastiffs might look intimidating, but they’re such gentle giants. My cousin had one, and that dog was the definition of laid-back. If you leave them alone, they’ll just hang out, maybe wander around the house a bit, but they’re not going to cause any trouble. They’re just too chill for that.
9. Lhasa Apso
Lhasa Apsos have been house dogs for centuries, so they’ve got the whole being-alone thing down. I remember visiting a friend who had one, and that little guy would just find a cozy spot and watch the world go by until his owner came back. No stress, just patience.
10. Maltese
Maltese dogs are pretty adaptable for their size. They love to play and be with you, but if you’ve got to step out, they’ll keep themselves busy. I had a Maltese growing up, and she was the queen of making her own fun when we weren’t around. Whether it was chewing on a toy or just people-watching from the window, she was good at entertaining herself.
How to Make Alone Time Easier
Even if your dog’s one of the laid-back breeds, there are a few things you can do to make their alone time a little more enjoyable:
1. Toys and Puzzles:

3. Routine:
Dogs love routines, and having a consistent schedule helps them feel secure. If they know what to expect, it’s a lot easier for them to relax when you’re not around.
At the end of the day, every dog is different, but if you’ve got one of these breeds, you’re in luck—they’ll probably handle your absences like a pro. And when you walk back through that door, they’ll be ready to pick up right where you left off.
