5 Tips for Training a Stubborn Dog

5 Tips for Training a Stubborn Dog

Training a dog with a bit of a stubborn streak isn’t always easy, but don’t worry—it can absolutely be done with the right approach.

Here are some hands-on tips to help you work with your dog’s personality, not against it.

1. Patience and Consistency are Your Best Allies

When training a headstrong dog, patience isn’t just a virtue; it’s a must. It’s common for these dogs to take a little longer to pick up on commands, so don’t rush things. Keep commands and actions consistent—use the same words, tone, and gestures each time. Over time, these repeated actions make it easier for your dog to understand and follow along.

Consistency also includes household rules. If you decide your dog shouldn’t jump on the couch, everyone in the home has to stick with it. Mixed messages can cause your dog to ignore or resist training.

2. Make Positive Reinforcement a Habit

For stubborn dogs, positive reinforcement is key. Rewarding the behavior you want to see again is how you build their cooperation. This doesn’t always mean treats—try using whatever your dog loves most, whether it’s praise, a belly rub, or a favorite toy. The goal is to let your dog know they’re doing something right, and that encouragement goes a long way.

For dogs who need a bit more motivation, high-value treats (like a bit of chicken or cheese) can work wonders. If your dog starts to lose interest in one type of reward, try switching things up to keep them engaged.

3. Keep Training Sessions Short and Sweet

Dogs with strong personalities often lose interest in long training sessions, so keep it short—around 5 to 10 minutes. Within that time, you can cover a lot by mixing in easy commands with new challenges, keeping things fresh and interesting.

End each session on a positive note with a command your dog already knows. This leaves them with a feeling of accomplishment and a positive association with training time.

4. Stay Calm, But Be Clear

Dogs pick up on our emotions, so a calm approach makes a difference. Avoid yelling or showing frustration, as that can make a stubborn dog dig in their heels even more. Use a clear, steady tone of voice, and stay confident. Dogs often respond best to calm, assertive guidance, especially those with a mind of their own.

If your dog isn’t getting a command right away, break it down. For example, if “stay” is challenging, focus first on a shorter version of the command, like “sit and wait.” Gradually, you can add time or distance to build their confidence.

5. Find Out What Truly Motivates Them

Every dog has something they love most. It might be food, but it could also be playtime, affection, or even a good scratch behind the ears. Figure out what lights up your dog’s eyes, and use that as a reward. This motivation can be your best tool for getting their attention and cooperation.

Training a dog with a stubborn personality takes time, but remember, each small victory builds your dog’s confidence—and your bond with them. Stick with it, stay positive, and watch as your efforts pay off with a happier, better-trained dog.
