7 Proven Ways to Calm Your Dog

7 Proven Ways to Calm Your Dog

Alright, so your dog’s really on edge. Maybe it’s the sound of fireworks, a thunderstorm rolling in, or they’re just having one of those off days. Watching them get all worked up is tough, but there are some straightforward things you can try to help them relax. These are methods that have worked for me, and hopefully, they’ll work for you too.

1. Create a Cozy Space

You know how when you’re stressed, you just want to curl up in a comfy spot? Dogs are the same way. They need a little area where they can go to feel secure. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy—just a comfy bed in a quiet corner. Throw in their favorite toy or a blanket that smells like you. If they like their crate, that’s even better. It’s their own little retreat.

I’ve noticed my dog settles down a lot faster if he has something of mine nearby. An old T-shirt with my scent on it works like magic. It’s amazing how much that can soothe them.

Dogmusic.com has a selection of music designed for dogs to help with anxiety problems. Thunderstorms definitely count. Some pups are known to relax so much that they fall asleep.

2. Play Some Soft Music

This might sound a bit odd, but music really can help. There’s actually music made specifically for dogs, but honestly, any calm, mellow tunes will do the trick. I usually opt for some classical music or gentle jazz. It’s all about creating a calming atmosphere.

I remember during one particularly loud storm, I put on some classical music, and it genuinely seemed to help. My dog stopped trembling so much and just laid down, like, “Okay, maybe this isn’t so bad.”

3. Use Calming Scents

Dogs have incredible noses, so certain scents can really help them relax. Lavender and chamomile are two good options. You can use a pet-safe diffuser or just put a little bit on their bed. Just make sure whatever you use is safe for dogs—some essential oils can be harmful.

I usually dab a bit of lavender oil on my dog’s collar. It’s simple, but it really seems to take the edge off for him. He’s grown to like it, and now it’s part of our calming routine.

4. Just Be There

Sometimes, all your dog needs is you. No fancy tricks—just your presence. Sitting with them, petting them, and talking to them in a calm voice can work wonders. Dogs pick up on our energy, so if you’re calm, they’ll start to calm down too.

There have been times when my dog was totally anxious, and all it took was me sitting next to him, petting him slowly. Eventually, he’d stop pacing and just lean into me, like, “Okay, I’m safe now.”

5. Keep Them Occupied

When dogs are anxious, keeping their mind busy can help. If your dog has too much energy and nothing to do, try giving them a puzzle toy or doing a quick training session. It gives them something else to focus on besides whatever’s making them nervous.

Sometimes I hide treats around the house and let my dog sniff them out. It’s a fun game for him, and by the time he’s found all the treats, he’s usually much calmer.

6. Take Them Outside

Sometimes, all your dog needs is some fresh air and exercise. If they’re really wound up, it might be because they need to burn off some of that energy. Exercise is a natural way to relieve anxiety in dogs, just like it is for us. Plus, it tires them out, so they’re more likely to just relax when you get back home.

After a good run, my dog is way more relaxed. It’s like he’s too tired to be anxious. Fresh air and exercise can really do wonders.

7. Look Into Natural Remedies

If your dog’s anxiety is more of a regular thing, it might be worth looking into natural supplements. Things like CBD oil, valerian root, or melatonin have helped some dogs. But definitely check with your vet before trying anything new to make sure it’s safe and you’re giving the right dose.

I tried CBD oil for my dog during a particularly tough time, and it seemed to help a bit. It didn’t completely fix his anxiety, but it definitely made a difference. Every dog is different, so it’s worth exploring if your dog is dealing with ongoing anxiety.
