5 Foods You Should Never Feed Your Dog (And What to Give Instead)

5 Foods You Should Never Feed Your Dog

If you’re anything like me, your dog has mastered the art of guilt-tripping you into sharing your snacks. Those big, pleading eyes? Irresistible. But some foods are way too risky to share, no matter how much they beg.

Here are five foods you should always keep away from your pup—and some safer, dog-approved alternatives they’ll love just as much.

1. Chocolate: The Classic Danger

I know, chocolate feels like an obvious one, but it’s worth repeating because it’s that dangerous. Theobromine and caffeine—the stuff that makes chocolate so good for us—can seriously harm dogs.

Why It’s Bad:

It messes with their heart and nervous system. Even a little can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or worse. Dark chocolate is especially toxic.

A Better Option:

When my dog’s begging for a treat, I reach for blueberries or a small spoonful of dog-safe peanut butter. They think it’s gold.

2. Grapes & Raisins: Small but Deadly

I learned this one the hard way when a friend’s dog ate a raisin off the floor. Did you know grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure? Yup, even one.

Why It’s Bad:

Scientists don’t fully understand why, but some dogs can’t handle even a single grape. It’s scary stuff.

A Better Option:

My go-to? Crunchy carrot sticks. They’re cheap, easy to prep, and great for their teeth.

3. Onions & Garlic: Sneaky Seasonings

This one surprised me when I first got a dog. Onion and garlic are hidden in so many foods—leftovers, sauces, even baby food. But they’re toxic for dogs, no matter the form (raw, cooked, or powdered).

Why It’s Bad:

They destroy red blood cells, causing anemia. Scary symptoms like weakness or pale gums can sneak up over time.

A Better Option:

Want to jazz up your dog’s food? Try a sprinkle of turmeric or unsalted chicken broth.

Bonus:

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory.

4. Avocado: Not Just About the Pit

Confession:

I used to let my dog lick the guac spoon. Turns out, avocados have persin, a toxin that can upset their stomach—or worse.

Why It’s Bad:

Most of the toxin’s in the skin and pit, but the flesh isn’t totally safe either. Dogs and avocado? Just don’t.

A Better Option:

Sweet potatoes. They’re full of fiber and vitamins, and dogs go nuts for them.

5. Xylitol: The Silent Killer

This one’s sneaky. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener, is in everything from sugar-free gum to peanut butter. Even a tiny bit can drop your dog’s blood sugar to dangerous levels.

Why It’s Bad:

It acts fast—vomiting, seizures, and liver failure can happen before you know it.

A Better Option:

Stick to plain fruits like apple slices (seedless!) or bananas. Natural sweetness, no danger.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Safe and Simple

Feeding your dog shouldn’t feel like a minefield, but it’s good to know what to avoid. Chocolate, grapes, onions, avocado, and xylitol are big no-nos, but there are so many safe and yummy alternatives. When in doubt, check with your vet—or just keep it simple. Dogs don’t need fancy snacks to be happy. A little love (and maybe a carrot) goes a long way.
