The History of the Australian Shepherd

The name of this breed is quite misleading. In fact, the Australian Shepherd originated from the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, and not Australia. The breed was commonly associated with the Basque Shepherd dog breed, which was introduced to the United States from Australia.

The breed became extremely popular in the United States after the First World War. They were commonly found at horse shows, rodeos and even played leading roles in mainstream movies. These dogs are known for their strong work ethics and therefore, the breed does best when he is constantly challenged.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Aussie is currently the sixteenth most popular dog breed.

The Beagle History

Beagle-like dogs were a common phenomenon back in the Roman times. However, the modern Beagle did not actually come into existence until the nineteenth century.

While many Greek artists have depicted similar dogs in their works, the actual origin of the Beagle remains a mystery.

It is said that William the Conqueror imported several Talbot hounds into England in 1066. Those dogs are thought to be the ancestors of the Beagle.

Since they were excellent hunting dogs, Beagles were a favorite among the English nobility. Both Edward II and Elizabeth I owned variations of the modern-day Beagle.

Rev Phillip Honeywood is credited with creating a pack of hunting dogs. The breed made its way to the United States sometimes in the 1800’s and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1884.

Purebred Beagle Dog

The Beagle is gentle in nature, but will always amuse you with his funny antics. They are loyal dogs who get along with kids and other family members.

However, the Beagle can also be quite mischievous and loves to follow a scent thanks to its strong sense of smell. Therefore, proper training is important if you want a well-mannered dog.

So what happens when you cross the Beagle with the Australian Shepherd? Let’s find out more about your new Australian Shepherd Beagle Mix puppy.

Aussie Beagle Mix Temperament and Training

With good socialization training from an early age, these dogs have the potential to be great playmates in families.

They are playful, affectionate dogs with a good nature. But this only happens with a good training regimen from a consistent pack leader.

Those that don’t engage in a strong socialization program can experience some behavioral issues. They need to know how to behave with other animals and children.

In some cases, the bold nature of the Beagle and shyness of the Shepherd may balance out. In others, they might not handle social situations too well. There is also the fact that there is an inherent prey drive in some beagles and herding drive in shepherds.

This means that anybody training Beagle Australian Shepherd mix puppies requires patience and consistent work from an early age.

Always use plenty of positive reinforcements when training your Aussie beagle as opposed to punishments and harsh corrections.

Yummy food treats and lots of praise words will work magic, even with the most willful of dogs. Positive reinforcement methods are meant to encourage good behavior during training.

In addition to training, you also want to expose your Beagle Australian Shepherd mix puppy to new people, children and other animals from a young age. Proper training and socialization will help him become a confident and well-rounded pet.

Grooming and Shedding

The thicker, medium length double coats are beautiful, but can be a problem when it comes to grooming and shedding.

They will need a lot of brushing to keep the coat in the best condition, and to deal with any lost hair.

It is recommended to brush your Beagle Aussie Mix at least two to three times per week to keep his coat and skin shiny and healthy.

Apart from brushing him, give your Aussie Beagle baths as needed. However, don’t overdo this or it may dry out the skin.

Some owners also warn about effective ear cleaning, especially with animals that inherit the large floppy ears of the Beagle.

It helps to find the best grooming tools to help with this care regimen. This can include a furminator, pet hair vacuum and top Deodorizing Wipes for Dogs.

It’s also important to trim your pup’s nails if they get too long. Don’t forget to brush their teeth a few times each week.

Exercise Needs

If you are in the market for a high energy breed that will keep up with your active lifestyle, then the Australian Shepherd Beagle mix will suit your needs best.

This dog needs the right diet and exercise plan. They require lots of exercise as they are sure to be an active dog.

The Aussie parent has a lot of stamina to run around herding all day. The Beagle isn’t exactly lazy either. This means that pups will need the right amount of exercise in local parks and with games in the yard.

Adults will need two hours of exercise each day, including daily walks, running, jogging, taking them to hiking trips, and playing fetch. Puppies will need shorter play times since their bones are still developing.

Dog parks can also be a great place to take your dog so he can socialize with other dogs and expend any excess energy.

A bored dog will easily become a very destructive dog and escape artist so it is crucial to provide your pet with plenty of interactive dog toys and challenges that will keep exercising their brain.

Aussie Beagle Mix Lifespan & Health Problems

A full grown Aussie Beagle has a lifespan of around 12 to 16 years. During that time some have to deal with hip and joint issues, eyes problems, hypothyroidism, and narcolepsy.

Note that diet, exercise and regular vet visits can help your pet remain happy and healthy, thereby extending his life expectancy.

Diet and Feeding Requirements

Since the Aussie Beagle is vulnerable to obesity and joint problems as he ages, you want to keep him active and provide him with a proper diet in order to maintain a healthy weight.

Feed your Beagle Aussie mix about 2.5 cups of high quality dog food each day, divided into two to three meals.

Avoid any foods that have additives or fillers in them. Carbs can make your dog want to overeat to feel full, so choose a nutrient-dense food to support his active lifestyle.

Overfeeding your Australian Shepherd Beagle Mix is also a no-no. Like many other dogs, he can gain weight quickly and suffer from other health problems, so be sure to feed him the correct amount for optimum health.

A tool like an automatic dog feeder allows dog owners to program the exact amount of food to feed their dogs. Since you can program the amount and time in advance, it will be much easier to stick to a given diet for your best friend.

You may also provide them with dog vitamins, such as glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for their joints, as well as wild Alaskan salmon oil with probiotics to improve coat and skin health.

Lastly, make sure your Aussie Beagle has access to fresh water to keep them cool and hydrated.

The goal is to offer the best nutrition possible and for your pet to enjoy eating their food. Speak to your veterinarian if you’re worried about your dog’s diet or eating habits.
