Both the Samoyed and Siberian Husky are almost similar, with a comparable genetic and working backgrounds. As you may have guessed, their offspring is an equally sociable and tolerant dog.

Samusky Parentage

To gain a better understanding of the Samusky, let’s take a brief look at each parent breed:

The History of the Samoyed

Like the Siberian Husky, the Samoyed belongs to the Spitz family.  These dogs originated from an ancient dog breed that was commonly used in Siberian to fish and hunt in the region’s harsh climatic conditions.

They were also commonly used for pulling sleds across the region. Not many canines have such a rich resume!

Samoyeds enjoy the company of their human friends and are known to be intelligent and great family dogs who enjoy playing with children.

These medium-sized dogs have a thick, double coat and are perfect for individuals looking for a cute and smart medium-to-large dog. They shed heavily, so you need to brush their coat regularly and still get used to having some fur around the home.

The History of the Siberian Husky

The ancestors of the present-day Siberian husky thrived in the cold conditions of northeastern Asia, where they lived with the nomadic Chukchi people.

Siberian Huskies were commonly used to pull the belongings of their Chukchi owners. A Russian merchant introduced the breed to North America in the year 1908.

In 1925, a team of Siberian Huskies and mushers delivered the life-saving medication more than 600 miles away to the residents of Nome, Alaska.

The Iditarod sled race is now held every year to commemorate the history of dog sled racing and to honor the brave dogs that delivered the medication to Nome.

Samoyed Vs Husky: Similarities

Very friendly, loyal and intelligent, the Samusky inherits some of the best traits from both parent breeds.

Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds are sometimes confused for each other but they are two different breeds. While they are distinct types of dogs, Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds have some interesting similarities.

For example, both Samoyeds and Siberian Huskies are Spitz breeds and they hail from the northwestern region of Russia.

Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds are also quite similar in height. Nonetheless, Samoyeds tend to be a bit heavier.

Both breeds have a double coat that helps to protect them against harsh weather conditions. As a result, both parent breeds are not hypoallergenic. In fact, both are known to be heavy shedders. They blow out their coat at least once a year.

Both parent breeds are normally sociable and loyal dogs.

A Samoyed Husky Mix will also most likely have a high prey drive since both of their parents possess these qualities.

Samoyed Vs Husky: Differences

Samoyeds are known for being more vocal and louder than Huskies. While Samoyeds are considered to be canines that produce a woo-woo sound, Siberian Huskies are known to howl. Simply put, Samoyeds enjoy barking while Siberian Huskies seem to talk.

Although both parent breeds have a reputation of being independent thinkers, Huskies are known to be very independent and stubborn. They enjoy doing things on their own terms.

Siberian Huskies also seem to be more energetic than Samoyeds.

When it comes to general appearance, the puppies can differ in size. Since this is a mix between two very similar dogs, however, you can expect your Samusky to be a medium to large sized dog.

Therefore, Samuskies are medium-to-large sized dogs who tend to grow to a height of about 20 to 24 inches, and an average weight of around 45 to 60 pounds.

Coat and Coat Colors

Samuskies have a fluffy double coat, erect ears and a bushy tail. They come in different colors, including white, red, gray, fawn, agouti, sable and cream. Samusky Temperament and Personality

A big draw for prospective Samusky owners is their loving and affectionate side. They are friendly, playful and sociable dogs with very high intelligence levels.

Many Samusky owners also describe their dogs as loyal, spirited and outgoing. They are energetic dogs who can become bored quite easily, so they need plenty of mentally stimulating activities each day, or else they will find their own ways to entertain themselves.

Some Samusky owners also say that their canines are escape artists, especially when they get bored.

Samuskies also tend to have a high prey drive, so don’t be surprised if they suddenly chase after a squirrel across the road since they are very curious dogs, as well. Therefore, they will require an owner who keeps a close eye on them.

Do Samuskies Bark A Lot? Are They Good For Apartment Living?

Samuskies are cheerful dogs, and they tend to be quite vocal. They can bark continuously, just to let you know that they are feeling good about it. This means they may not be the best choice for apartment living.

As with any dog, you can discourage your Samoyed Husky Mix puppy from excessive barking with proper training and regular exercise.

Are Samuskies Good with Kids?

Samoyed Husky Mixes are gentle and friendly to people. They are great with children, but their herding instincts may get the better of them when there are very small kids in the family.

As with any dog, it’s important to always supervise your children when playing with your Samoyed Husky Mix to help keep both the kid and pup safe.

Is the Samusky a Good Family Dog?

Samuskies are great family dogs since they are very friendly. They are loyal family companions who are comfortable living in either a big, active family or with a single dog owner.

With their independent spirit and energetic nature, however, they may be quite a challenge for first time owners.

Although the Samusky is a great family dog, they sometimes choose a favorite member of the family and stick to them. However, these dogs can also do well in big families provided they get sufficient exercise each day.

Is the Samusky Good With Cats And Other Pets?

Samuskies have herding instincts inherited from their Samoyed parents, so you may find them chasing cats and other small pets.

Of course, each individual cat and dog has their own temperament and preferences, but you should feel more confident if your Samusky has been well socialized with other dogs and cats for a young age.

Training

Samoyed Husky Mixes require firm, consistent and patient training with lots of positive reinforcements. As dedicated pack dogs, they require confidence and firmness in their trainer.

Housetraining should start immediately since these dogs are intelligent and quite stubborn.

In addition, they should be socialized with people and other family pets from the beginning so they become friendly to them even when they are fully grown.

Exercise Needs

Samuskies have high energy levels, but they are also vulnerable to weight gain. Make sure your active Samusky gets around 30 to 60 minutes of daily walks with shorter walks and active play sessions added in between to maintain them at a healthy weight.

Daily exercise will also prevent destructive behaviors. Samuskies are very intelligent and can become bored quite easily, so they also need mental stimulation with lots of interactive dog toys.

Samuskies are also known to be escape artists, especially when bored. So they need to be kept in a fenced in yard that gives them space to exercise and move around.

Grooming and Shedding

Samoyed Husky Mixes have a thick, double coat and they shed quite a lot. Daily brushing will help reduce shedding and control the hair lying around the house. Although regular vacuuming is recommended, you should expect some fur around your home.

Apart from coat grooming, it’s important to check and clean your puppy’s ears regularly to prevent infection.

It’s also advisable to bathe them at least once every two weeks or so, and use deodorizing wipes for dogs in between the bathing sessions to keep their coats in good condition.

Their nails also need to be trimmed at least once a month to prevent splitting, cracking and further discomfort.

Feeding and Diet

A good Samusky diet is one that is specifically designed for a large breed with very high energy levels. This Samoyed Husky mixed breed dog is prone to weight gain, so you should feed him using an automatic dog feeder and following a strict feeding schedule.

Samuskies should be fed a high quality dog food that is low in calories. This is also because they have a tendency to gain weight.

The amount of pet food will vary depending on how active your Samoyed Husky Mix is. More active pups will require more food.

Since both the Samoyed and Siberian Husky are prone to hip dysplasia and other joint issues, it’s important to give your pup probiotics and Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil. Also, give your dog fresh water each day to prevent dehydration.
