As with any crossbreed, it’s important to find out more about each parent breed since your puppy will inherit some of the traits of both parents. So let’s take a look at each of the parent breeds.

First, the Akita

The Akita was developed in Japan in the 17th century. Although Akitas were refined as strong hunting dogs, they were cherished for their loyalty.

As their hunting role diminished, Akitas were kept as family pets, mainly because of their affection and dignified demeanor. These dogs are regarded as spiritual creatures and a symbol of health.

The breed made its way to the United States in 1937, when a loyal Akita encouraged Helen Keller to carry the first to the US after a trip to Japan. The breed remained rare in America until after the Second World War, when returning US soldiers brought more of these dogs from abroad.

The AKC officially recognized the Akita as a unique breed in 1972.

Akita Dog History

Second, the Samoyed

Samoyeds were originally very popular in eastern Siberia. These hard-working canines are best known for their herding and sled pulling roles.

During cold conditions, these dogs would serve as blankets for their owners (the Samoyede people).

To keep them well-behaved, Samoyeds need a firm pack leader. While in packs, these dogs look up to one dog for leadership. In the home environment, the owner should establish himself as the pack leader.

Happy Samoyed Dog

Mixing the Two Parent Breeds

Combining these two parent breeds gives you a fluffy pup. However, most predictions will vary based on the inherited traits from the Akita and Samoyed parents. So what should you expect from your Samoyed Mixed with Akita puppy? And what does a Samoyed Akita Mix look like?

General Appearance of the Akita Samoyed Mix

As with other mixed-breed dogs, the results will vary. However, you can expect a Samoyed and Akita Mix to be a cute, fluffy dog.

For appearance, the Akita Samoyed Mix will inherit the best characteristics from both parent breeds. They are usually half Akita and half Samoyed. However, they may also be 25 to 75 or 75 to 25 depending on the dominant genes.

Their facial characteristics are a delightful combination of both parents. Their snout is normally more protruding, like that of the Samoyed. They have small and sharp teeth, just like both parents. They also have straight ears and alert eyes that are sure to melt your heart.

Training

For housetraining and obedience training, timing is very important. Training your Akita Samoyed Mix should start immediately when you bring your puppy home, and it must be consistent.

You need to keep their independence and stubborn streak under control when they are still puppies. Leaving your Samkita untrained can encourage destructive behaviors.

These intelligent and energetic pups also need proper socialization to prevent aggressive tendencies. Early in their puppyhood, you need to introduce them to unfamiliar people and other animals.

Start training them early in their life. You can also seek help from a professional dog trainer to prevent aggression and destructive behaviors.

Brushing regularly is essential for the Samoyed Akita Mix coat hair because it helps to prevent mats and tangles. You may also want to trim it now and then.

Bathing can be done twice a month and wipe them clean from time to time using high-quality deodorizing wipes for dogs.

Health Issues of the Samoyed Akita Mix

Since this mixed breed is not a purebred dog, you can expect these dogs to inherit health issues from either of the parents.

Akitas suffer from health conditions such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand’s disease, and skin issues.

On the other hand, Samoyeds are likely to experience hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, glaucoma, and diabetes mellitus.

Since this mixed breed dog can inherit health concerns from either of the parent dogs, it’s best to have them screened first.

Samoyed Akita Mix for Adoption and Rescue

Although it may be difficult to find a Samkita for adoption at a rescue or animal shelter near you, you can ask to be put on the waiting list. If one comes in, the rescue organization will be happy to contact you.

One major benefit of adopting an older dog is that you will be saving one of these pups from suffering by giving them a loving home.

How Much Does It Cost To Own An Akita Samoyed Mix?

Besides the cost of buying or adopting a Samoyed Akita Mix, you should have the funds to provide your new canine companion with everything he needs.

This includes a quality crate like the MidWest Folding Crate for large dogs. You also need to buy a comfortable dog bed for your new pet. That’s why we recommend an orthopedic dog bed for your Samkita, like the Furhaven Orthopedic Dog Bed.

Other costs associated with Samkita ownership include the cost of food, veterinary care, grooming, a leash, a harness, and lots of interactive dog toys. Fortunately, some of these items are normally one-time purchases, so they are not as expensive as you may think.
