The History of the Cane Corso Rottweiler Mix

The Rotticorso is a relatively new designer dog that’s a cross between a purebred Rottweiler and a purebred Cane Corso.

Being a new hybrid, there’s little information available about his history. To gain a better understanding of their temperament, we should take a look at each parent breed.

The ancestry of the Rottweiler can be traced back to when the Romans began using their dogs to guard cattle. Those dogs were also commonly used to kill wild boar.

Those dogs arrived in a German town called Rottweil by the Middle Ages and were crossed with native sheepdogs to produce the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, also called the Rottweil Butcher’s Dog. Butchers would also use these powerful dogs to guard and drive their cattle from one town to another.

When cattle driving was declared illegal in the nineteenth century, the popularity of Rottweilers decreased, leading to a significant decline in their numbers.

The breed made its way to the United States in the 1930s and was recognized by the AKC in 1935. Rottweilers are respected for their courage and strength.

The Cane Corso Italiano dog, on the other hand, is a strong athletic dog that was also developed to protect their owner’s property and to hunt wild boar. These working dogs were also used on farms. The breed was officially recognized in 1996.

The General Appearance of the Rotticorso

The Rotticorso is a large dog with very strong legs. Their paws are round and padded. They have a muscular neck and a deep chest. Their ears will vary depending on the dominant genes, but they are often flopped and triangular in shape.

So How Big Does a Rotticorso Get?

As we’ve briefly mentioned, a Cane Corso Rottweiler Mix aka the Rotticorso should be a large dog.

A full grown Rotticorso stands around 22 to 27 inches tall and weighs around 80 to 120 pounds.

Coat and Coat Colors

As with the parent breeds, Rotticorso dogs usually have a short, double coat that varies in color.

Common colors include dark blue, red, fawn, and gray.

Temperament and Personality Traits

The Rotticorso is a sweet, loving dog that doesn’t tolerate being left alone for extended periods of time. They always want to be near their families.

They are loyal and protective dogs who make great watchdogs. They are also very active since both the Rottweiler and the Cane Corso have working backgrounds.

The Rotticorso will do best in a household with a secure, fenced-in yard where they can play and move around. These dogs are very intelligent and quite stubborn. Therefore, they require a firm owner who they can respect.

The strong owner should train these dogs using positive reinforcements, such as lavishing praise on them and giving them yummy treats for a job well done.

Your Rotticorso should be obedient and ready to embrace each training session if it is exciting and you give him plenty of attention.

This hybrid dog makes a great family pet, usually forming a strong bond with his owner, but they tend to be aloof with strangers.

Socializing your dog when he is still a young puppy can help them to grow into a well-behaved dog. Make sure to introduce them to different people and other animals so they can get used to the activities and noises of people and other pets.

The Rotticorso has natural hunting instincts, so he may want to chase cats and other animals. Therefore, you should keep them in a secure yard to prevent them from causing trouble. Also, make sure to keep him on a leash during walks.

Is the Rotticorso Kid-friendly?

The Rotticorso dog makes a great family pet for households with older children. These dogs have a reserved and gentle temperament, so they should get along well with respectful children if properly trained and socialized.

Due to their large size, however, they are not suitable for homes with infants or small kids. These are big dogs who may unintentionally knock over small kids so make sure to supervise them during playtime.

Are They Good Guard Dogs?

The Rotticorso is a good guard dog since he inherits the Rottweiler’s personality. They are generally loyal and protective of their families.

The Rotticorso is NOT suited for first-time dog owners since they can be difficult to control. Nonetheless, proper training and early socialization can make the Rotticorso a well-rounded dog that you and your family will enjoy.

Training

The Cane Corso Rottweiler Mix is a very intelligent dog, but he can also be stubborn. This makes housetraining quite hard. These dogs will need a firm and strong owner who can train them to be submissive.

The owner should divide their training into short sessions to help keep them interested. Praising them or rewarding them with yummy treats whenever they do well is recommended.

Since this is a very intelligent dog, they enjoy mental stimulation. Take your dog to a nearby dog park to get them used to other dogs, as well.

Exercise Needs

The Cane Corso Rottweiler Mix has a working background and therefore, he will need plenty of exercises each day.

These active pups will usually require at least 80 minutes of exercise every day. This includes daily walks to help burn off their excess energy. These dogs will also make a good jogging or hiking companion. However, keep your dog on a leash since they have natural hunting instincts and can chase after animals.

Your Rotticorso should enjoy doggie games in a fenced-in yard and will also enjoy playing with interactive dog toys since they are generally very intelligent and require mental stimulation.

By keeping your Rotticorso properly exercised, you’ll end up with a sweet, loving and affectionate dog.

Grooming and Shedding

Grooming the Rotticorso dog is quite easy since both parents are considered to be low-maintenance dogs. They have short hair that makes maintenance easy.

Moreover, both parents shed low to moderate all year round so it shouldn’t be too difficult to keep your carpets clean especially if you invest in a quality vacuum. Brushing their coat every day should be enough to keep their skin and coat healthy.

Bath your Rotticorso occasionally and use deodorizing wipes for dogs regularly to help keep their coat clean.

Ear cleaning should be done regularly. Brushing their teeth can be done two to three times a week. Make sure to clean their mouth and nose using a soft napkin or cotton from time to time. Lastly, you need to trim their nails using a dog clipper at least once every two weeks.

Feeding and Diet

The best way to choose high quality dog food for your pet is to discuss this with your vet. Your vet should be able to understand your pet’s nutritional needs and recommend the right food depending on age, size, health, and activity level.

Generally, Rotticorso dogs needs a balanced diet that contains a fair amount of protein. The best source of protein is fish and lean meats.

The best diet for the Rotticorso should also include probiotics and wild Alaskan salmon oil to help keep their coat and skin healthy. It should also contain fish oil and glucosamine supplements because this dog is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia.

Avoid overfeeding your dog as doing this can cause diseases or negatively affect their overall health. It’s recommended to feed your Rotticorso three full meals each day.

And don’t forget to give your pooch fresh water every day to keep them hydrated.

Rotticorso Health Issues

As with other mixed breed dogs, the Rotticorso can inherit certain health conditions from each parent breed. These pups can experience hip and elbow dysplasia, entropion, cherry eye, hypothyroidism, bloat and gastric dilation volvulus.

Hip dysplasia often leads to a permanent joint disorder. Detecting the condition early can prevent it from becoming worse.

Make sure to take your dog for vet checkups. It’s also advisable to take the Rottie Cane Corso Mix for occasional tests such as blood tests, X-rays, biopsies, and physical examinations by a qualified veterinarian.

Life Expectancy

Generally speaking, Rotticorso dogs have an average lifespan of about 9 to 12 years.

While adopting a Cane Corso Rottweiler Mix from a rescue center may reduce the costs, you may need to wait until they list one for adoption.

In addition to the cost of buying a Rotticorso puppy, you need to factor in the cost of pet products such as the Furhaven Orthopedic dog bed for keeping your pup safe and comfortable after a long, tiring day as well as the MidWest Folding Crate for large Dogs for training your dog.

If you follow the above steps, you should be able to get a healthy Rotticorso for you and your family.
